Chris Corsano Plus Animal, Surrender! Guest April 2nd on Sound And Vision

Joining Leslie Stein on Wednesday, April 2nd, 10am ET on Sound and Vision: Chris Corsano is a New York-based drummer who has been active at the intersections of collective improvisation, free jazz, avant-rock, and experimental music since the late 1990’s. He’s been the rim-batterer of choice for some of the greatest contemporary purveyors of “jazz” (Joe McPhee, Paul Flaherty, Mette Rasmussen, Zoh Amba) and “rock” (Sir Richard Bishop, Bill Orcutt, Jim O’Rourke), as well as artists beyond categorization (Björk for her Volta album and world tour, Michael Flower, Okkyung Lee). A renowned solo performer in his own right, Corsano has a new solo record The Key (Became the Most Important thing [and Then Just Faded Away]) out on the Drag City label.  PLUS: Brooklynites Peter Kerlin (Sunwatchers, Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band, Bent Arcana) and Rob Smith (Pigeons, Gray/Smith, D. Charles Speer & The Helix) began playing together as Animal, Surrender! in 2023. Kerlin’s 8 string bass (similar to a 12 string guitar) compositions and Smith’s spacious and evocative drumming set the basis for an emulsion of folk pastoralism, Fahey finger style lyricism, West African polyrhythm, post rock economy and prog expansiveness. Their 2024 self-titled debut on Ernest Jenning Record Co. situates covers of Nick Drake and Mike Wexler among instrumentals that lean into deep psych folk trance ostinato grooves, spiraling melodic passages and the spaces between.
