Ata Kak Joins The Cologne Affair August 22nd

Saturday, August 22nd 10am ET/4pm CET: This year’s Summer in Cologne is exceptionally hot and dry and it’s allowing us to present unique concerts in unusual open air venues. This time, we’ve found ourselves on the other side of the River Rhine – or, to be more precise, in the Kalk district, perhaps something like Cologne’s answer to Brooklyn or Queens. The Cologne Affair meets the extraordinary Ghanaian musician Ata Kak, whose 1992 cassette ‘Obaa Sima’ was rediscovered a few years ago thanks to the brilliant label Awesome Tapes from Africa, and who has since been bringing his wild hybrid of highlife and hip hop to stages around the world. Yaw Atta-Owusu, born in 1960 in Kumasi, Ghana, takes us on his journey and tells us about his time living in Germany with his wife in the 1980s, and what motivates him today to make new music. And, of course, he shares the music that has influenced him.
