Lee Perry Biographer / Dub Historian David Katz on The Cologne Affair, July 25th

Instead, The Cologne Affair host Jan Lankisch presents a special episode on dub with American-born, London-based author David Katz, with whom he has recently been working on a larger project.

Katz, whose acclaimed Lee “Scratch” Perry biography, People Funny Boy, remains the definitive account of the artist’s life, returns with Dub Revolution, a comprehensive new book exploring the emergence of dub and the creative culture of mixing and remixing that transformed Jamaican music in the 1970s. In the book, Katz examines how dub revolutionized the recording studio, reshaped popular music, and redefined the producer as an artist in their own right. Emerging as an underground phenomenon in Jamaica, dub would go on to influence a wide range of musical genres across the globe.

Lankisch is joined by Cologne-based journalist and DJ Olaf Karnik, who has been shaping the city’s music scene with his passion for soul and dub for more than four decades. In the first hour, the two talk to Katz about his most influential dub tracks and his newly published book. In the second hour, Karnik plays a wild selection of rare and lesser-known dub cuts.
