Australia’s Legendary Trio The Necks on The Cologne Affair October 17th

Saturday, October 17th 10am ET: Can you imagine the confusion when a band tells you they’ve been doing exactly the same thing for 40 years—and still manages to excite you at the highest level? That’s exactly what happened to The Cologne Affair host Jan Lankisch last week, when he presented a concert by the exceptional Australian band The Necks. The experimental jazz trio of Chris Abrahams on piano, Lloyd Swanton on bass and Tony Buck on drums formed in Sydney in 1987, has mastered something what they describe as “music that plays itself.” Their performances develop organically, with their improvisations gradually gathering momentum until they flow like a raging river. Every concert is different. That’s the magic of The Necks: they’ve somehow managed to do the same thing for a long time without ever sounding the same.
